Fracture Patient

The Cast Care Instruction Sheet is a printable general guideline for maintaining your cast and the casted body part in good condition throughout the healing process.

We want you to know that you most likely have soft tissues as well as bones healing, and will probably be experiencing discomfort. Discomfort is to be expected, and you will be experiencing additional discomfort because the cast will be restricting movement and your muscles and joints don't like that. All of these issues can and do generate diffuse discomfort.

What you want to be aware of is pain that is localized in a small area. Look to make sure that there are no pressure points in the cast that could create blisters. Don't over react. Keep in mind that with a cast your activitiy level is supposed to be somewhat restricted. Don't overdo your activity. Regardless of how a cast is put on, there is no way to prepare for extreme athletic activities. It is important to maintain a "reasonable" activity level. Follow the doctor's orders, including restrictions and recomended activities.

If there is a question on what you can or cannot do, a very good rule of thumb is that if you think the doctor would not allow the activity then DON'T do it.

If you have additional questions please feel free to call our office. The goal of this page and the cast care instruction sheet is to help you understand what was done and why. If there are specific care problems or issues, call the office, someone will call you back with instructions or information.
